This film series for the Sexual Diversity Studies community will be recurring through the summer.
Dana Seitler has selected The Handmaiden (2016) to view this week.
Based on the Sarah Waters novel Fingersmith (2002), The Handmaiden is, at once, a love story and revenger thriller. Set in in Japanese-occupied Korea in the 1930s, the film focuses on a woman named Sooki, who is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her. Things get complicated when Sooki falls in love with her target.
