About Sex Salon:

The Sex Salon is a monthly speakers series organized and hosted by graduate students from the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies, and meets on the last Wednesday of every month from 6:00 – 8:00 PM EST.

Facilitator:

Atticus Yus, Organizer, University of Toronto

Event Description:

This event will foster a discussion on the importance of fanfiction. Hosted by Atticus Yus, a fanfic writer and MA student in the Department of English at the University of Toronto, they share their personal affinity to fanfic in order to spark dialogue on its supportive role in journeys of queer and racialized self-exploration. After they share a selection of passages from their own fanfics, Atticus will then lead a conversation in awareness of fanfiction’s controversial reputation and hopefully, mediate the genre’s outcry by highlighting these stories’ potential for personal impact, supported by the comment section of their AO3 page. Although fanfiction often struggles to be respected in academic and creative writing circles, this event hopes to empower those personally invested in fanfiction by recognizing the genre’s capability to rupture from mainstream norms and infiltrate media with underrepresented portrayals of queer identities.
