Richard Fung

Richard Fung is a video artist, writer and activist. Tapes such as Orientations: Lesbian and Gay Asians (1984) and Dirty Laundry (1996) deal with the intersection of race and queer sexualities. Others, like My Mother’s Place (1990) and Sea in the Blood (2000), are autoethnographic explorations of gender, sexuality and colonialism. Installation with F-16s, Apache Helicopters and Rock Doves (2003) and Jehad in Motion (2007) are video installations on Israel/Palestine, and Out of the Blue (1991) confronts racism and policing in Toronto. Richard’s publications include the much anthologized essay “Looking for My Penis: The Eroticized Asian in Gay Video Porn,” and 13: Conversations on Art and Cultural Race Politics, co-authored with Monika Kin Gagnon and 13 artists and curators. Richard is a co-founder of Gay Asians Toronto in 1980. Among other awards he is a winner of the Bell Canada Award and the Toronto Arts Award for Media Art. A former Rockefeller fellow, he is an associate professor in the Faculty of Art at OCAD University.
