Of Kin and Other Impossible Homes
A new exhibition centering trans and gender-diverse diasporic Asians is opening soon at The ArQuives—don’t miss this community-rooted project, funded by the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies! Attend the opening night of the exhibition on May 29th, 2025, 6-8pm. Refreshments will be provided.
Did you know that The ArQuives is Canada’s largest LGBTQ2+ archives, dedicated to preserving the histories of queer and trans communities? Each year, the Curatorial Committee organizes a spring exhibition that highlights different aspects of LGBTQ2S+ life. The Committee is excited to announce this year’s exhibition, Of Kin and Other Impossible Homes.
This exhibition centers trans and gender-diverse individuals from across the Asian diaspora in Canada, highlighting the ways that connection, care, and belonging have been built beyond traditional notions of family and kinship. Visitors will encounter personal photographs, zines, textiles, archival ephemera, audio recordings, and multimedia artworks that speak to a reimagining of what home can be—and always has been—for queer and trans Asians. Find out more information in this latest post on The ArQuives’ website!
Opening reception is on May 29th, 6-8pm at The ArQuives (34 Isabella St), and the gallery is open for public viewing on Fridays 4-8pm, Saturdays 11am-3pm, and Sundays 11am-3pm, or by appointment on other days (email curatorial@arquives.ca). Can’t make the opening night? Don’t worry! The exhibition will be on view until July 11th, 2025*, and programming will take place both in-person and online throughout the summer.
*The exhibit is closed on Saturday, June 28th and Sunday, June 29th.
