“The Watermelon Woman is a 1996 romantic comedy directed by Cheryl Dunye which explores issues of Black representation, lesbian history and more. Dunye stars as a young woman who works in a video store and becomes obsessed with researching the history of an early African American film actor credited only as the Watermelon Woman. As she gets deeper into the history of the actor, she also navigates her relationship with friends and potential lovers. This film is significant as the first feature directed by a Black lesbian. (It’s also notable for causing a political scandal for the National Endowment for the Arts because of the sex scene which resulted in a change to the way arts funding in the US is done.)”
