Shelley Craig

Dr. Craig’s research focuses on: 1) the needs of sexual minority youth and subsequent program development and service delivery and 2) the roles and interventions used by health social workers to impact the social determinants of health. As principal investigator she has recently tested several targeted interventions for sexual minority youth, researched the influence of the media on their resiliency and identity, and identified the experiences and readiness to practice of queer students in schools of social work. Other studies have identified the HIV testing patterns of and prevention for Latina transgender sex workers, and the use of mental health services by urban gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) youth. Dr. Craig recently directed an extensive community research plan, developed and established a multi-million dollar comprehensive service delivery system for sexual minority youth and their families.

Dr. Craig is registered and licensed clinical social worker that takes an active leadership role within her community. Selected experiences over her twenty years of practice include: Board of Directors of Pride Toronto, Founder and Executive Director of several community agencies for sexual minority youth; Vice-President of the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) National Board of Directors and Chair of the Education Subcommittee the Council of Sexual Orientation and Gender Expression (CSOGE) of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and current National President of Heartstrong.
