Undergraduate Requirements

General Requirements Information

The SDS undergraduate program offers a Specialist (requiring 10.0 FCE or Full Course Equivalents), a Major (requiring 6.0 FCE), and a Minor (requiring 4.0 FCE). Students enrolled in any SDS program before 2019 have the option of switching to the 2019 program requirements, or fulfilling the existing requirements for the year in which they enrolled. For further inquiries or questions about substitutions for courses no longer offered, please contact SDS Office at sexual.diversity@utoronto.ca.

Organization of Courses 2019

All students are expected to take an introductory course that emphasizes gender and sexuality such as our First Year Seminar (SDS199–only available to first year students) or its equivalents (e.g. WGS160Y1, CSE240H1, SOC209H1, or other courses by approval); Foundational Courses (SDS255, 256, and 355); an even distribution from each of our Thematic Clusters (“Politics & Policy,” “Formations & Practices,” and “Media & Aesthetics”); and Capstone/400-level Electives.

Our program also includes a wide range of elective courses (some are cross-listed) with other departments and programs, including English, Philosophy, Political Science, Health Studies, Cinema Studies, Geography, Equity Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and others. (10.0 credits, including 4.0 credits at the 300+ level, 1.0 credit of which must be at the 400-level.)

1. One course from: SDS199H, WGS160Y1, NEW240H1/​ CSE240H1, or SOC209H1. Students may substitute with another introductory course that emphasizes intersectionality of sexuality, with the approval of the Director or Undergraduate Director.

2. SDS Foundational Courses (1.5 credits):

3. Thematic Clusters (3.0 credits): 1.0 credit from each of the three Thematic Clusters.

4. Capstone (1.0 credit): SDS460Y1

5. Other Electives (3.5-4.0 credits): Remaining credits selected from the SDS Electives Group

Major Completion Requirements:

(6.0 credits including 2.5 SDS credits at the 300+ level, 1.0 credit of which must be at the 400-level)

4. Capstone requirement (a minimum of one 0.5 credit from the following list):
All 400-level SDS and JNS courses.
